OVERVIEW
Australia's visitor options let you enter for tourism, visiting family/friends, or short non-work activities. Your passport and circumstances determine whether you use Visitor (600) Tourist Stream, eVisitor (651) or ETA (601). All require you to be a genuine visitor who will leave at the end of your stay.
Iconic cities, world-class beaches and national parks, vibrant food and culture and family and friends waiting
to see you. Plan the fun, we'll help keep the admin calm.
Tourists planning a short stay
Friends and family visiting loved ones
Attendees of weddings, reunions, and other personal events
Parents/grandparents visiting children (short stays; check your best pathway)
Purpose & itinerary – a short, believable plan (who you’ll see, where you’ll go).
Funds – show you can pay for flights, accommodation, and daily costs (and travel insurance is wise).
Home-country ties – job, study, family, assets, or other anchors that make sense for your return.
Invitation/support (if applicable) – informal invite from your host plus their basic details/supporting docs, if they’re helping with costs.
Travel history – prior compliant travel helps; explain gaps or refusals plainly if asked.
Health & character – you may need medicals and/or police checks depending on your profile and stay length.
Right pathway – 600 (most passports), 651 (eligible European passports), or 601 (eligible ETA passports).
No work.
Study is limited (short, recreational courses only).
Respect your stay period and visa conditions (including “No further stay” if imposed).
Keep your details current and depart on time.
A simple, trip-ready plan that matches your purpose and dates
Confidence on what evidence helps (funds, ties, invite, itinerary)
Plain-English answers to common visitor-visa questions
A calm, consistent point of contact (no run-around)
WHAT THE DEPARTMENT EXPECTS FROM YOU
(the "Genuine Visitor" idea)
You're visiting temporarily for a lawful, short-term purpose, have enough funds, and strong reasons to return (work, study, family, property, commitments). You understand the no-work rule and you'll leave before your visa expires.
• Visitor (600) – Tourist stream: available to most nationalities; applies onshore or offshore.
• eVisitor (651): for eligible European passports; apply offshore.
• ETA (601): for certain eligible passports via the app; apply offshore.
All are for short stays with no work.
Many visitors get up to 3 months per visit. Some receive 6 or 12 months (case-by-case). Grant length, entries, and conditions are decided by the Department.
No. Visitor visas are for tourism and visiting loved ones. No paid work. Short recreational study is usually fine; formal study is not the aim of this visa.
A booked return flight helps, but not always mandatory. At minimum, have a plausible plan (dates, places, host details if any) and enough funds to match it.
Recent bank statements, savings, payslips, or a sponsor’s support letter + bank evidence. Provide what actually reflects how you’ll fund the trip.
Include their invitation, relationship evidence, and financial proof (and your own ties to home). Explain living arrangements if you’ll stay with them.
Yes–each person needs their own application. Provide parental consent where required and details of care, schooling (if any), and costs.
Sometimes. If your visa doesn’t have a “No further stay” condition, you may be able to apply for another visitor visa before your current one expires. If your visa has that condition, extension onshore is generally not possible.
Be straight. Explain what changed (job, funds, ties, purpose). Provide coherent, consistent evidence this time.
It’s strongly recommended. Australia’s medical care is excellent but can be expensive for visitors.
Depends on your profile, stay length, and recent travel. If requested, follow the instructions promptly to avoid delays.
It varies by passport, history, and the pathway (600/651/601). Apply well before travel, send clear information, and respond quickly to any requests.
If your visa is multiple-entry, yes–just respect the maximum stay per visit and any total time-in-Australia expectations.
