THE VISAS AT A GLANCE
SKILLED INDEPENDENT (POINTS-TESTED)
Skilled Nominated (State/Territory)
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional)
EOI (SkillSelect): Your public “resume” for skilled migration. No fee to lodge; you list your claims (points, occupation, visas you want). Keep it truthful and updated – invitations rely on it.
State nomination (190/491): Separate to the EOI. You apply to a state/territory if you meet their criteria. Common levers:
o Occupation appears on that state’s current list
o Recent work in the state, study completed there, or a job offer
o Residence in the state (onshore applicants)
o Minimum points/English, commitment to live/work there
o Extra paperwork: ROI/registration, employment verification, bank/pay slips, etc.
Programs change: States open/close, update quotas and rules across the year. Always check the current criteria before you apply.
Skills assessment – positive assessment in your nominated occupation.
Points test – minimum pass mark (and a competitive score for invitation).
Age – usually under 45 at invitation for points-tested streams.
English – minimum competent English (higher scores can boost points).
Health & character – standard checks for you and any family.
YOUR OBLIGATIONS AFTER GRANT (HIGH LEVEL)
189/190 (PR): You become a permanent resident; comply with Australian laws and any nomination commitments (for 190).

189 = independent PR; 190 = state-nominated PR; 491 =
state-nominated or family-sponsored regional provisional visa with a PR pathway.
You lodge an EOI first (list 190/491 options). Then you follow the state’s nomination steps if you meet their criteria. If nominated, you’ll receive an invitation linked to that nomination.
You must reach the pass mark to be eligible, but real invitations are competitive. Higher points (and state nomination for 190/491) improve prospects.
Age, English, skilled employment (Australia/offshore), qualifications, Australian study, regional study, partner points, NAATI, Professional Year each has rules and caps.
Yes, partners and dependent children can be included on 189/190/491. For 491, they share the regional conditions.
The 190 grant is permanent, but states expect you to live and work in the nominating state for a period consistent with your nomination commitment. If you won’t honour that, don’t apply there.
Many state programs accept offshore applicants in targeted occupations criteria vary. Watch each state’s announcements and lists.
Consider other states, wait for list updates, or re-assess your occupation/points strategy (e.g., English uplift, skills assessment pathway, partner points).
Timelines vary: state nomination timing + invitation rounds + visa processing. Being decision ready (clean evidence, consistent claims) helps avoid avoidable delays.
