PARTNER VISA
Build your life together without the admin fog.
Build your life together in Australia. Partner visas are about your genuine relationship we keep the admin clear so you can focus on each other, not the forms.
temporary grant first, then permanent residence when eligible.
show your shared life: finances, household, social proof, and commitment.
include eligible dependent children.
offshore stream allows travel while you wait; onshore stream keeps you here on a bridging visa (if eligible).
permanent stage opens access to long-term planning and benefits.
OVERVIEW
Partner visas come in two stages: a temporary stage (820 onshore / 309 offshore) followed by a permanent stage (801 / 100). You apply once; the Department assesses temporary first, then permanent when you’ve met time and relationship settings. Prospective Marriage (Subclass 300) is a separate pathway for fiancés who plan to marry then apply for a partner visa.
People in a genuine, continuing relationship with an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible NZ citizen
Married or de facto couples (including same-sex) meeting time/relationship evidence rules
Families including dependent children of the main applicant
You must show your relationship is genuine and continuing, addressing four angles with evidence:
(e.g., shared expenses, accounts, liabilities)
(e.g., living arrangements, roles, care for children)
(e.g., how you’re known as a couple)
(e.g., future plans, continuity)
Short statements from you both (and statutory declarations from supporting witnesses) help tie your evidence together.
Sponsorship – your partner sponsors you and must meet sponsor rules (character/disclosure, sponsorship limits, prior sponsorships).
Relationship evidence – documents/photos/stat decs that align to the four factors above.
Health & character – medical checks and police clearances (you, and sometimes the sponsor).
Location matters –
820/801 (onshore): you’re in Australia when you apply and when the temporary stage is decided; a Bridging Visa may keep you lawful while you wait.
309/100 (offshore): you’re outside Australia when you apply and when the temporary stage is decided.
Prospective Marriage (300) – engaged couples apply offshore; after marrying within the visa period, you transition to a partner visa.
if key details change (address, relationship status, new passport, new child).
evidence must remain consistent; notify if your circumstances change.
and any visa conditions attached to your temporary grant.

Onshore 820/801 keeps you in Australia (you’ll usually receive a bridging visa while you wait). Offshore 309/100 is lodged and initially decided while you’re outside Australia.
No. De facto relationships are eligible if you meet the required time/evidence settings (some exemptions exist for long-term relationships with children, cultural/legal barriers, or compelling circumstances).
Use consistent evidence across financial, household, social and commitment factors (e.g., leases, bills, joint accounts, shared responsibilities, photos with friends/family, plans).
Yes – dependent children can be included now or later as subsequent entrants, with their own health/character checks.
Some long-term relationships (especially with a child in common) may be assessed differently for the permanent stage – your evidence and dates still matter.
• Onshore stream: travel may be possible if your bridging visa allows—and you may need to apply for a Bridging Visa B before leaving.
• Offshore stream: you can travel freely; just ensure you meet the location requirement at decision for the temporary stage.
Timeframes vary with caseload and your evidence quality. Being decision-ready (consistent, relevant, well-ordered evidence) helps avoid avoidable delays.
Yes – applicants typically provide police clearances for each relevant country/time period. Sponsors may also need checks or disclosures under sponsor character rules.
No set minimum income, but sponsors must meet character and sponsorship obligations and you must still show the relationship is genuine and continuing.
Your location at lodgement and decision is critical for the stream you choose. If your plans change, seek current official guidance before acting.
If you’re engaged and plan to marry, 300 can get you to Australia to marry within the visa window. After marriage, you apply for the partner visa pathway.
