EMPLOYER SPONSORED
Make your move, minus the stress
Say yes to a real job in Australia. The 482 lets approved employers sponsor skilled workers so you can live here and get on with the work.
A JOB FIRST
arrive with a sponsor, a role and a salary.
WORK WHERE YOU'RE NEEDED
city or regional, across many in-demand occupations.
BRING YOUR PEOPLE
options for your partner and eligible children to join you.
A PATHWAY WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT
many roles can lead to employer nominated PR if you and your employer meet the settings.
OVERVIEW
The Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS 482) visa lets an approved sponsor fill a genuine skills shortage with an overseas worker for a fixed term. You work in the nominated occupation for the sponsoring employer, under the conditions attached to your visa.
WHY CHOOSE EMPLOYER SPONSORSHIP
A real role, real income, and Australian work experience from day one plus a potential step toward permanent residence through employer nomination if eligibility is met.
WHO THIS IS FOR
Skilled workers with relevant qualifications/experience and a genuine job offer in Australia
Employers who can show a local shortage and meet sponsorship obligations
Families who want to relocate together (partner + eligible dependent children)
HOW IT WORKS (HIGH LEVEL)
Employer becomes/uses an approved sponsor (or labour agreement sponsor).
2. Nomination: the employer nominates your occupation/position, salary and location.
3. Your visa: you apply with evidence you meet skills/English/health/character and any registration/licensing.
4. Grant & start: you work only for the sponsoring employer in the nominated role (unless you transfer sponsors).
role fits the occupation and salary is at/above required levels for that job and location.
qualifications and work history matching the occupation (some roles need skills assessment or registration).
minimum test scores (or exemptions) as per your stream/occupation.
(if applicable) + health/character checks.
you must work in the nominated occupation for the sponsor; changes usually need a new nomination (and sometimes a new visa).
YOUR OBLIGATIONS AFTER GRANT
Work only in the nominated occupation for your sponsoring employer (unless a permitted transfer occurs).
Keep details current; comply with visa conditions and any licensing/registration rules.
Family members must also follow their visa conditions (including work/study settings).

EMPLOYER NOMINATION SCHEME
Make your move, minus the stress
Turn proven work into a permanent plan. The 186 lets eligible employers nominate skilled workers for permanent residence.
PERMANENT RESIDENCE
live, work and study anywhere in Australia.
TWO COMMON PATHWAYS
Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) from a qualifying 482, or Direct/stream based on role & criteria (including labour agreement scenarios).
BRING YOUR FAMILY
partner and eligible dependent children included.
STABILITY
Medicare access and a settled base for long-term goals.
OVERVIEW
The Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS 186) is a permanent visa. An eligible employer nominates a position; you lodge the visa with evidence you meet the stream’s criteria (work period with the sponsor, occupation/skills, English, health/character, and any registration).
WHY CHOOSE THIS VISA
It rewards proven contribution with a stable future stay with your community and employer, grow your career, and plan the long term.
WHO THIS IS FOR
Skilled workers already on a 482 looking to transition via TRT
Workers nominated under a labour agreement
(Where available) applicants meeting criteria for direct nomination with an eligible employer
HOW IT WORKS (HIGH LEVEL)
Employer nomination – approved business nominates your occupation/position as permanent.
2. Your visa – apply under the relevant stream (e.g., TRT or labour agreement) with evidence of English, skills/registration, health/character and the required work period where applicable.
3. Decision – if granted, you become a permanent resident from day one.
continuing, full-time, market-rate pay.
meet the stream’s rules (e.g., required period with the sponsor for TRT).
at least the stream’s minimum (higher English can help settlement and employment).
if your occupation requires it, hold it (or be eligible).
standard checks for you and any family.
YOU OBLIGATION AFTER GRANT
This is PR – comply with Australian laws. Employers may expect you to continue in the nominated role for a reasonable period consistent with the nomination intent.
WHAT YOU'LL WALK AWAY WITH
A straightforward nomination → visa game plan
Clarity on stream choice (TRT vs labour agreement) and timing
Plain-English answers to common 186 questions
A calm, consistent point of contact (no run-around)
Often yes, but the new employer must nominate you first (and be an approved sponsor). Timing matters – don’t stop work or switch roles until you’re lawfully able to.
Partners generally have full work rights on secondary 482 visas. School-age children will need to enrol; fees/policies differ by state/territory.
Many holders transition to an employer-nominated PR (see 186 below) if occupation, time on the job, salary, and sponsor settings are met.
Some occupations and passport combinations require it; many professional roles rely on qualifications + experience. Check your occupation’s rule set.
A substantive change (title/duties/ANZSCO) usually needs a fresh nomination and sometimes a new visa. Stay aligned with what was approved.
Most applicants come through TRT after a qualifying period with the sponsoring employer. Some labour agreement pathways and selected scenarios allow different routes—stream rules apply.
There’s a minimum period with the sponsoring employer/occupation before you can transition. Exact timing depends on current policy settings – confirm before you plan dates.
Yes – partners and dependent children can be included. They become permanent residents if the visa is granted.
PR nomination is tied to a genuine, ongoing role. If duties/occupation change materially, the nomination may need to be revisited.
Each stream specifies a minimum. If you’ve studied or worked long-term in English, you may qualify via testing or accepted alternatives – check current rules before lodging.
As a permanent resident you’re not tied to an employer by visa conditions, but early departures may raise questions if they’re inconsistent with the nomination’s genuine need. Plan transitions carefully.
